In todayβs episode, we dived into an essential topic: why land restoration matters and the efforts being made right here in The Gambia to restore degraded land.
According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), land restoration is rehabilitating ecosystems to make landscapes safer and more productive for people, wildlife, and plants. This crucial effort helps prevent natural disasters like floods, enhances soil fertility, boosts food production, and fosters economic development.
Now, if we want to protect our environment, strengthen resilience against drought, and sustain a growing global population, land restoration must be a priority.
In 2023, The Soil Solution successfully restored over 30 hectares of degraded land across the West Coast and North Bank regions. This initiative has empowered farmers and laid the groundwork for sustainable agriculture in the country.
Among the beneficiaries are Ebrima Nyan and Gim Touray, who have seen remarkable improvements in their farmlands and crop yields. They gave valuable insights into this podcast
This year, with support from the G20, Global Land Initiative βThe Soil Solutionβ is set to restore an additional 50 hectares of degraded land. This initiative aims to create sustainable opportunities for farmers and young people, ensuring long-term benefits for communities.
