THE SOIL SOLUTION, AWARDED G20 GRANT TO RESTORE ACIDIC LANDS, EMPOWER LOCAL COMMUNITIES
The Soil Solution, a leading advocate for Sustainable Soil Management, is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a prestigious grant from the GROUP OF TWENTY (G20) Global Land Initiative (which is a coalition of 19 countries and the European Union) to implement a land restoration project as a way of helping to achieve the three (3) Rio-Conventions, particularly the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The project is expected to be implemented in various regions in The Gambia with special focus on areas where groundnut (peanut) is a staple crop.
The grant, worth over One Million (1 million) Dalasis, will not only improve the immediate condition of agricultural soils in The Gambia but also establish a scalable, sustainable model of acidic land restoration that can be adapted and applied in other regions globally.
The project’s circular-economy approach of using organic and locally available materials is crucial for climate-forward and circular agricultural solutions. This project stands as a testament to the power of innovative, community-driven solutions in addressing environmental challenges and promoting the achievement of sustainable development.
“This prestigious G20 Global Land Initiative grant, will spearhead a groundbreaking project in The Gambia to restore acidic lands using sustainable circular agricultural methods, the Executive Director of The Soil Solution, Ebrima Jarra said. ‘This initiative will not only improve soil fertility and support biodiversity but also aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, empowering local communities and fostering climate resilience while reviving lands to achieve sustainability; one hectare at a time”.
The G20 support underscores global commitment to advancing sustainability and empowerment of grassroot organizations.
This land restoration project offers a range of significant environmental benefits by improving farmland soil pH-achieved through training, demonstrations, and application. Thus, addressing immediate issues like soil acidity and fertility, while also contributing to broader environmental goals such as biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, sustainable waste management, water conservation, and climate change resilience.
These benefits will not only improve the immediate agricultural landscape but also contribute to the overall health and sustainability of the environment in The Gambia and potentially serve as a model for similar environments globally.
