The Soil Solution Commends the Government of The Gambia for Procuring 10,000 Metric Tons of Organic Fertilisers for the 2026 Agricultural Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Release No. TSS-PR-2026-002
Banjul, The Gambia | 11 July 2026
The Soil Solution (TSS) warmly commends the Government of the Republic of The Gambia for its timely
decision to procure 10,000 metric tons of organic fertilisers for the 2026 agricultural season. This important
investment reflects a growing commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, restoring soil health, and
strengthening national food security.
The introduction of organic fertilisers into the national fertiliser procurement system represents a significant
step towards diversifying the country’s agricultural input supply. By expanding farmers’ access to both organic
and conventional fertilisers, the Government is creating greater opportunities for improved soil fertility
management, increased crop productivity, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Healthy soils are the foundation of resilient agricultural systems. For many years, continuous cultivation,
declining soil organic matter, nutrient depletion, and soil acidity have reduced the productivity of many farming
communities across The Gambia. The increased availability of organic fertilisers will contribute to rebuilding
soil organic carbon, improving soil structure, enhancing water retention, increasing beneficial microbial activity,
and promoting balanced nutrient cycling.
At The Soil Solution, we believe that this initiative aligns well with global efforts to promote climate-smart and
regenerative agriculture while supporting the aspirations of Gambian farmers to achieve higher and more
sustainable yields. While celebrating this important milestone, The Soil Solution encourages the continued
promotion of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM), where organic fertilisers are used strategically
alongside mineral fertilisers based on soil conditions and crop nutrient requirements. Such an integrated
approach maximises fertiliser efficiency, improves farmers’ returns on investment, and ensures the sustainable
use of agricultural land.
The Soil Solution further encourages continued investment in:
Soil testing and soil fertility mapping to guide fertiliser recommendations.
Farmer education on the effective use of organic and inorganic fertilisers.
Strengthening quality assurance systems for agricultural inputs.
Expanding public-private partnerships to improve fertiliser availability and accessibility throughout the
country.
Supporting local production and value addition of organic fertilisers using locally available organic
resources.
As a national organisation dedicated to soil health, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable land
Management, The Soil Solution reaffirms its readiness to collaborate with the Government of The Gambia,
development partners, research institutions, farmer organisations, and the private sector to maximise the
Impact of this investment.
Through technical support, soil analysis, farmer training, demonstration plots, and evidence-based
recommendations, The Soil Solution remains committed to helping farmers improve soil productivity while
Protecting the country’s natural resources for future generations.
The Soil Solution congratulates the Government for this progressive policy direction and encourages all
stakeholders to work together to ensure that the successful procurement is matched by efficient distribution,
appropriate farmer training, and effective field-level utilisation. Together, we can build healthier soils, stronger
farming systems, and a more food-secure and climate-resilient Gambia.
